Occasion & Fit Guide

How to pick the right piece for the event: match the bag to your essentials, the belt to your measurement, and the scarf to the evening. All guidance below comes from our guides and the product specifications on each product page.

Step 1 — Start with the occasion

Before choosing a piece, name the event: wedding, black-tie evening, dinner, party, brunch, or work. The occasion decides how formal the piece should be and how much it needs to hold. A black-tie evening calls for a clutch; a party where you want your hands free calls for a convertible clutch or a mini top-handle bag; a wedding calls for ivory, blush, champagne, or floral tones.

Step 2 — Match the bag to your essentials

Lay out what you will actually carry — most evenings, that is a phone, one or two cards plus a little cash or a slim cardholder, keys, and lipstick or lip balm. A standard smartphone is roughly 6 inches tall and 3 inches wide; that single measurement rules out the tiniest minaudières for a lot of shoppers. Then match the pile to the bag:

PieceTypical fitBest for

Frame clutchPhone, cards, keys, lipstick, small mirrorEvenings out, dinners
Mini top-handle bagPhone, wallet, keys, small essentialsParties, brunch, daytime events

Fits are planning figures from our clutch size guide and the product specifications, which are labeled proposed until verified with the supplier. Treat them as guidance, not guarantees.

Step 3 — Measure for belts

A belt's size is measured from the buckle to the middle hole — not your waist size, not your dress size. Decide first where the belt will sit: at the natural waist, at the hips, or over a dress. Measure around that spot over the clothes you will wear, then choose a belt size 2 to 4 inches larger than your trouser size, because belts sit over fabric and need overlap for the buckle end. The belt size guide gives the step-by-step method.

Step 4 — Scarves, wraps, and hair accessories

For scarves and wraps, the choice is drape, not size: lightweight chiffon for warm evenings, a satin silk-look scarf for a polished finish, a knit infinity scarf for cold weather, a blanket scarf for travel. See the scarf fabric guide for how each fabric behaves. For headbands, the band should sit snug without pinching — see the headband fit guide. For hair clips and pins, match the hold to your hair: finer hair needs fewer, lighter pieces; thicker hair needs a stronger clip or more pins.

Step 5 — Still unsure?
